๐Ÿšจ South Africaโ€™s transport system is not under pressure. It is structurally failing.

I built a Transport Infrastructure Demand Index (TIDI) for 2024/25 to test a simple question:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Is our infrastructure keeping up with demand?

The answer is uncomfortable.

๐Ÿ“Š TIDI SCORE: 76 / 100

๐Ÿ”ด SEVERE INFRASTRUCTURE STRESS

Letโ€™s be clear about what this means:

๐Ÿš› Over 85% of freight is on roads

๐Ÿš† Rail is underutilised despite demand

๐Ÿš— Key corridors are chronically congested

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Infrastructure is deteriorating faster than it is maintained

๐Ÿ’ฃ Here is the real problem:

South Africa does NOT have a transport demand problem.

It has a transport allocation failure.

We built the system.

We just donโ€™t run it properly.

๐Ÿ“‰ Why this should worry you:

-- Logistics costs are rising โ†’ inflation risk

-- Export bottlenecks โ†’ growth constraint

-- Road overuse โ†’ fiscal pressure

-- Supply chain instability โ†’ investment risk

๐Ÿ‘‰ Transport inefficiency is no longer a sector issue.

๐Ÿ‘‰ It is now a macroeconomic risk variable.

๐Ÿง  What my index reveals (and many miss):

This is NOT just about funding.

Itโ€™s about:

-- Misaligned incentives

-- Weak execution

-- Governance breakdown between infrastructure and operations

๐Ÿ“ If you are in:

Government โ†’ this is a policy failure signal

Private sector โ†’ this is a cost and risk signal

Investors โ†’ this is a pricing variable

๐Ÿ”ฅ The uncomfortable question:

How long do we continue blaming โ€œlack of infrastructureโ€

โ€ฆwhen the real issue is failure to optimise what we already have?

Iโ€™m building this into a full Transport Risk & Infrastructure Intelligence Framework (linked to capital allocation, governance, and economic performance).

Debate this with me:

Is South Africaโ€™s transport crisis a capacity problem

or a governance and execution failure?
