๐จ South Africaโs transport system is not under pressure. It is structurally failing.
I built a Transport Infrastructure Demand Index (TIDI) for 2024/25 to test a simple question:
๐ Is our infrastructure keeping up with demand?
The answer is uncomfortable.
๐ TIDI SCORE: 76 / 100
๐ด SEVERE INFRASTRUCTURE STRESS
Letโs be clear about what this means:
๐ Over 85% of freight is on roads
๐ Rail is underutilised despite demand
๐ Key corridors are chronically congested
๐ ๏ธ Infrastructure is deteriorating faster than it is maintained
๐ฃ Here is the real problem:
South Africa does NOT have a transport demand problem.
It has a transport allocation failure.
We built the system.
We just donโt run it properly.
๐ Why this should worry you:
-- Logistics costs are rising โ inflation risk
-- Export bottlenecks โ growth constraint
-- Road overuse โ fiscal pressure
-- Supply chain instability โ investment risk
๐ Transport inefficiency is no longer a sector issue.
๐ It is now a macroeconomic risk variable.
๐ง What my index reveals (and many miss):
This is NOT just about funding.
Itโs about:
-- Misaligned incentives
-- Weak execution
-- Governance breakdown between infrastructure and operations
๐ If you are in:
Government โ this is a policy failure signal
Private sector โ this is a cost and risk signal
Investors โ this is a pricing variable
๐ฅ The uncomfortable question:
How long do we continue blaming โlack of infrastructureโ
โฆwhen the real issue is failure to optimise what we already have?
Iโm building this into a full Transport Risk & Infrastructure Intelligence Framework (linked to capital allocation, governance, and economic performance).
Debate this with me:
Is South Africaโs transport crisis a capacity problem
or a governance and execution failure?
